I urge you to let this sound ‘undulate your senses’ and act as the driving mechanism when reading this blog >> Nakamarra
Nai.Palm leads this band into the neo soul era that is unlike any other. The first track I heard by Hiatus Kaiyote was “Nakamarra” which features Q-Tip from 90’s hip hop collective A Tribe Called Quest (who inspired the “boom bap” beat). This track alone introduces you to the immense range of Hiatus alongside one of the greats in the world of hip hop; and this track was nominated for a Grammy in 2013.
This quartet from Melbourne, Australia comprises of Naomi “Nai.Palm” Saalfield (vocals, guitar), Perrin Moss (percussion, drums), Paul Bender (bass), and Simon Mavin (keyboard). They create music that is categorized into the neo soul, future soul, electronic, jazz, rnb, and funk realms. With two albums (both containing Grammy nominations) and two EPs, Hiatus Kaiyote is only warming up the industry.
The band has been around for almost 6 years now and continues to produce thought provoking tracks. The first time I saw them live was at the Fillmore in San Francisco back in October of 2015. It was a bit after their second album release, “Choose Your Weapon”. My favorite track off this album has to be “Molasses” which takes you on trip guided by quick changing drum patterns.
